The World Canine Organization (FCI)

With the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, world dog organizations have been in existence for 100 years. Other organizations, sometimes older, work by its side, without for that matter being attached to it. The number of dog show organized every year throughout the world is impressive: several tens of thousands.

The World Canine Organization

The FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) was founded on May 22, 1911. Its founding countries were Germany, Austria, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. It ended with the First World War and was recreated only in 1921 on the initiative of the Société Royale Saint-Hubert (Belgium) and the Société Centrale Canine (France). Today, these two countries have no link of subordination with it.

An international authority, the FCI groups together 84 countries including most European countries, along with many countries from Asia, Latin America and Africa. It is based in Thuin, in Belgium. It aims at:

  • determining conditions of recognition for the genealogical books of the different member countries and partners under contract ;
  • align the regulations of international dog events (organizations, judging, international working and beauty championship titles);
  • promoting the circulation of breed standards drawn up by the countries of origin and which are regularly published in a quarterly magazine by the FCI;
  • making sure that every member country holds at least four international championships a year. The FCI grants the titles of International Working and Beauty Champions.

The dog’s origin

Several hypotheses have been put forward as to the origins of dog domestication which took place approximately fifteen thousand years ago. Joint hunting, wolves having chosen to get closer to men in order to take advantage of their food scraps or wolf cubs adopted by human groups. All these hypotheses are plausible.
